Five Ways to Spice Up Your Online Dating Profile

If your online profile is as dormant as that lacy negligee stuffed in the back of your sock drawer, maybe it’s time to consider hitting refresh on your write-up. After all, a kick-ass girl needs a kick-ass profile.

Take a page out of author Amy Webb’s book, Data, A Love Story: How I Gamed Online Dating to Meet My Match. In it Webb, CEO of Webbmedia Group, a digital strategy agency, writes about how she signed up for dating websites as a man, then mined more than 100 profiles of “popular” women for key strategies.
What works and what doesn’t? Here’s what she found.
Keep your “About Me” short and sweet
Read it: 100 words. That’s it. You’ll pique his interest but not scare him off with crazy specifics. Tell him about your intense love for sweater-wearing Yorkies after you start chatting.
Use upbeat, conversational language
Cut the resume jargon and be your fun, amazing self.? An “outgoing, down-to-earth girl” might sound cliché, but then again, who wants to hang with a “future-thinker fluent in HTML”?
Snap a photo with “golden hour” lighting
Dig into your Facebook vault for an outdoor pic taken during the first or last hours of sunlight. This warm glow is the golden ticket to nailing the perfect “I gotta message this girl right now” kind of photo.
If that doesn’t work, show some skin
If you’re panicking because the only “golden hour” photo you have is from freshman year, don’t worry. Just take one that shows a little skin. Think bare arms or subtly sexy V-necks, not in-your-face cleave. If you’re going for borderline Playboy bunny, you could attract the wrong kind of attention.
Make the first move
Your updated profile doesn’t give you license to sit on your butt and wait. Reach out with a casual (and pickup-line free) message: “Hi! I like that you [detail from profile]. I’m interested in [detail] too.” Then sit back and wait for the responses to roll in.
